Avast is a better choice as it provides more security-related features and extra resources in its security suites than Norton. As having worked running a business IT for several years now, Norton is really a large memory hog with an excessive amount of bloatware. I’d stay away from it. Personally, i run a free version of Avast antivirus, quite lightweight and does an excellent job.
Norton vs Avast: Which usually Software Provides Better Protection? Like the majority of of the other antivirus software, Avast plus Norton also use signature-match recognition, which checks files against an enormous database of known malware, plus heuristic monitoring (checks for behavior attributes of software) to identify all sorts of known and unknown viruses. hsasupport.org
Other companies that offer a free anti-virus solution include Norton, Bitdefender plus Panda, but they are pretty bare-boned compared to Avira, Avast and AVG. The biggest drawback of free antivirus applications, besides the lack of security tools, will be the number of pop-up ads asking you in order to upgrade to the paid version.
Avast is a much better choice as it offers more security-related features and extra utilities in its protection suites than Norton. Independent testing prove that both software offer excellent malware protection with minimum impact on system performance, but Norton returns too many false positives.
